Can futures build-up predict direction? NSE bhavcopy, 8 Jul 2024 – 7 Oct 2026; price of the underlying, OI of all expiries
Day-wise build-up Price: nearest-expiry future. OI and volume: all expiries combined, so monthly rollover is not counted as unwinding.
TCS (TCS) Futures Build-up: What This Table Shows
One row per session
Each row is one trading day for TCS futures: the closing price of the nearest-expiry contract, its change from the previous close, total open interest across all expiries, the change in that OI, and the build-up the combination points to.
How build-up is decided
Build-up compares two things: did the price rise or fall, and did open interest rise or fall. Rising price with rising OI is long build-up; falling price with rising OI is short build-up; rising price with falling OI is short covering; falling price with falling OI is long unwinding.
Why OI covers all expiries
In the last week of every month positions move from the expiring contract to the next month. If only the near-month contract were used, those days would show a large OI fall and a misleading "unwinding" label. Combining all expiries keeps the reading honest through rollover.
How to Read TCS Build-up Over Time
Look for runs, not single days
One day of long build-up means little. Several sessions in a row of the same build-up show that positions are consistently being added in one direction, which is more informative.
Watch the transitions
A run of long build-up followed by long unwinding shows buyers taking profits or exiting. A run of short build-up followed by short covering shows sellers closing positions. These transitions often mark a change in the prevailing positioning.
Compare OI change with volume
A large OI change on heavy volume reflects real repositioning. A small OI change on heavy volume usually means the same positions changed hands without new money entering.
The period summary
The cards above the table compare the first and last session of the selected period. Price and OI both higher over the period means positions were built on the way up; price higher with OI lower means the move came mostly from shorts exiting.
Limitations
Labels describe, they do not predict
Build-up tells you what happened to prices and positions in a session. It does not tell you what will happen next.
Hedging and arbitrage
Futures OI also rises when funds hedge stock holdings or run cash-futures arbitrage. Those positions carry no directional view but still appear as build-up.
End-of-day data
Figures come from the NSE F&O bhavcopy, so intraday swings are not visible.
TCS Futures OI Chart, Trend and Sentiment
Futures OI vs time
Each bar is the futures open interest of one session, coloured by its build-up, with the TCS price as a line. Switch between all expiries added up and the near-month contract alone; the near-month view drops at every expiry as positions roll to the next month.
20-session trend
Compares the price change and the OI change over about a month. For stocks it also ranks the OI growth against every other stock future, from 0 (OI shrank the most) to 100 (grew the most).
Build-up sentiment
A score from −100 to +100: 50% today's build-up, 30% the last five sessions and 20% where OI was added (on up days or down days). It matched the direction of the same session about 91% of the time on NIFTY, but the next day only about half the time.
Can it predict direction?
On NSE data from July 2024 to October 2026, the next day was up about half the time after every build-up type, for NIFTY, BANKNIFTY and F&O stocks. The one pattern that held was slower: stocks whose futures OI shrank the most over 20 sessions lagged NIFTY by about 0.7% over the following 20 sessions, in each of the three years tested.
TCS Futures Build-up: Frequently Asked Questions
Does long build-up mean TCS will rise tomorrow?
No. In our two-year backtest the next session was up about half the time after long build-up, short build-up, short covering and long unwinding alike. Build-up describes what happened, not what comes next.
What is futures build-up for TCS?
It is a label for each session based on how the TCS futures price and total open interest changed: long build-up, short build-up, short covering or long unwinding.
Which is the strongest build-up?
Long build-up and short build-up involve new positions being opened, so they are usually treated as stronger than short covering or long unwinding, which only involve positions being closed.
Why is the near expiry different on some rows?
The price always comes from the nearest contract that had not expired on that date. After each expiry the next contract becomes the near month.
What is "Lots traded"?
Volume divided by the lot size, which is how many contracts changed hands in the session.
How far back does the history go?
Up to one year (about 250 sessions). Use the period buttons to switch between 1, 3, 6 and 12 months.
