What the F&O Ban List Shows
Market-wide position limit (MWPL)
For every stock in the F&O segment, the exchange sets a ceiling on the total open positions all traders together may hold in its futures and options. It is linked to the stock's free float, so a stock with fewer freely traded shares gets a smaller limit.
The ban period
When open interest across all the stock's contracts crosses 95% of the MWPL, the stock enters the ban period. Traders can then only reduce their positions; a new position that increases open interest attracts a penalty. The ban continues until open interest falls below 80% of the limit.
MWPL used
Our list shows how full each stock's limit is. Stocks between 80% and 95% are close to the ban; a stock already in the ban stays there until it drops below 80%.

NSE's end-of-day file marks the stocks where no fresh positions are allowed in the next session, so you can see tomorrow's ban list the evening before.
How We Calculate It
Data
NSE's official daily MWPL file (with MWPL, open interest and future-equivalent open interest for every F&O stock) and the securities-in-ban list, for every session since January 2023.
Days in ban
Counted from the stored ban lists: how many sessions in a row the stock has been in the ban up to the chosen session.
What Our Backtest Found
Entering the ban
From January 2023 to October 2026 NSE put stocks into the F&O ban 607 times. From the close of the first ban session, the stock beat the market over the next 20 sessions exactly half the time; the median excess return was close to zero.
Leaving the ban
After leaving the ban, stocks did slightly worse than the market over 5 sessions (beat it 42% of the time) and about the same over 20 sessions.
How to use it
The ban tells F&O traders where positions are crowded and new positions are not allowed; it does not tell which way the stock will go. For education only.
F&O Ban List: Frequently Asked Questions
Which stocks are in the F&O ban today?
The list at the top of this page shows every stock in NSE's F&O ban period for the latest session, and the stocks marked for ban in the next session.
What happens when a stock is in the F&O ban?
Traders may only close or reduce existing positions in that stock's futures and options. Increasing open interest during the ban attracts a penalty from the exchange. Trading in the cash market is not affected.
When does a stock come out of the ban?
When the open interest across all its contracts falls below 80% of the market-wide position limit at the end of a session.
Does a ban mean the stock will fall?
No. On our NSE data, stocks entering the ban beat the market over the next 20 sessions about half the time. The ban shows crowded positions, not a direction.
