Midcap Nifty (MIDCPNIFTY) Future Price vs Open Interest: What the Chart Shows
Three panels, one time axis
The top panel shows daily candles of the nearest-expiry MIDCPNIFTY future. The middle panel shows total open interest across all expiries. The bottom panel shows the daily change in that OI, with each bar coloured by the build-up of the day.
Why price and OI belong together
Price tells you which way the market moved. Open interest tells you whether that move came with new positions or with positions being closed. Reading the two together separates moves backed by fresh money from moves driven by exits.
Colours in the bottom panel
Green is long build-up, red is short build-up, blue is short covering and amber is long unwinding. Grey bars mark days where price or OI barely changed.
How Traders Read Price and OI Together
Trend with rising OI
A price trend accompanied by steadily rising OI shows positions being added in the direction of the move. Many traders consider such trends better supported.
Trend with falling OI
A price trend while OI shrinks shows the move is driven by participants closing positions. Such moves can lose momentum once the closing is done.
OI rising in a range
When price moves sideways but OI keeps rising, both sides are adding positions. The eventual breakout can be sharp as one side is forced to exit.
Sudden OI drops
A large one-day fall in OI with a big price move often marks forced exits or the end of a positioning phase. Check the build-up colour to see which side was closing.
Limitations
Not a forecast
The chart shows how prices and positions evolved. It does not predict the next move.
Non-directional positions
Hedges and arbitrage trades raise OI without expressing a view on price.

EMAs, Premium and the Trend + OI Reading
EMA 20, 50, 100 and 200
Exponential moving averages of the futures close, worked out on the full history loaded, so the longer averages are ready even when you look at one month. Drag the chart to go back in time and scroll to zoom.
Premium over spot
The bottom panel shows how far the near-month future trades above (green) or below (red) the spot price. The premium shrinks towards zero as expiry approaches.
Trend + OI reading
A score from −100 to +100: 50% where the spot price sits against its 20-session EMA, 30% the build-up over the last 10 sessions and 20% today's build-up. Short covering and long unwinding (positions closing) count half as much as fresh long or short build-up, so a short-covering day pulls a bearish reading towards neutral.
Does it predict direction?
Not reliably. On NSE data from July 2024 to October 2026, stocks whose moves were backed by rising OI did only slightly better, and on NIFTY moves made on falling OI tended to reverse. BANKNIFTY often behaved differently from NIFTY.
