What Market DNA measures

One number from five angles

Market DNA puts five independent readings of NIFTY on the same scale, from −100 (bearish) to +100 (bullish), and averages them. Each one comes from official NSE end-of-day data that our other tools already show in detail.

Options positioning

The average of the open interest, put-call ratio, max pain, option chain and PE-CE difference scores: where option writers are adding positions and where they defend.

Volatility

Low implied volatility against its own past year reads as calm (positive); high IV or puts getting much dearer than calls reads as fear (negative).

Futures

Long build-up, short build-up, short covering and long unwinding across all F&O stock futures, together with NIFTY futures themselves.

Breadth

How many Nifty 500 stocks rose against how many fell, and the share trading above their 50-day average.

Activity and flows

Cash-market turnover against its 20-session average, signed by the day's NIFTY move: heavy turnover on an up day is strong participation, heavy turnover on a down day is strong selling. FII net buying is added where that data is available.

How to read it

Agreement matters more than the number

When all five pillars point the same way, the market is acting in one direction. When they disagree, for example bullish options but weak breadth, the move is narrow and less dependable.

Changes

The "what changed" lines show which pillar moved the most since the previous session, which is often more useful than the level itself.

Not for long-term investing

Market DNA is a short-term reading. The P/E line under the gauge is long-term context only and is not part of the score.

Check the backtest

The backtest on this page shows what NIFTY did after high and low scores on our own data. If it shows no edge, treat the score as a description, not a forecast.
