What Gap Up and Gap Down Stocks Shows

Gap up and gap down

A stock gaps up when it opens above the previous day's close, and gaps down when it opens below it. The gap shows news or orders that arrived while the market was shut: results, global cues, a big order or a rating change.

Open to close

How the stock moved after the open. A gap up that keeps rising held its buyers; one that slips back during the day "faded".

Gap filled

A gap is filled when the price comes back to the previous close during the day: the low reached it after a gap up, or the high after a gap down. Unfilled gaps show that the overnight news held all day.

Filters

Pick the gap size (1%, 2% or 5%), a minimum turnover and whether the gap held or filled. Thinly traded stocks can gap on a single order, so the default list needs Rs 1 crore of turnover.

How We Calculate It

Data

NSE's official capital-market bhavcopy: open, high, low, close and previous close for every session since January 2023.

Pre-open session

NSE's opening price comes from the 9:00 to 9:08 am pre-open auction, so it reflects the orders placed before the market opened.

What Our Backtest Found

Gaps fade during the day

Across 26,422 gap ups of 3% or more from January 2023 to October 2026, the stock closed below its opening price 63% of the time (average -0.8% from the open). Gap downs did the opposite: 63% closed above the open, +1.8% on average. The opening price tended to overshoot in both directions.

Most gaps are not filled

Only about one in three gaps of 3% or more was filled the same day (the price got back to the previous close): 36% of gap ups and 34% of gap downs.

After the day

Over the next 5 and 20 sessions both gap ups and gap downs did slightly worse than the market on median. A gap is news being priced in, not a reliable signal for the following weeks. For education only.
