What the Sectoral Indices Page Shows
Sector heatmap
Price returns of every NSE sector and theme index over 1 day to 1 year. Green cells rose, red cells fell; the deeper the colour, the bigger the move for that period.
Relative strength against NIFTY 50
The Nifty Auto index divided by NIFTY 50. A rising line means the sector is doing better than the market, a falling line worse, whatever the market itself does.
Rotation
Leadership in the market moves between sectors. The rotation chart places every sector by how it did against NIFTY 50 over 3 months (across) and 1 month (up): leading sectors sit top right, weakening ones bottom right, lagging ones bottom left and improving ones top left.
Leadership ranks
Each sector ranked by 1-week, 1-month and 3-month return. A sector climbing from a low 3-month rank to a high 1-week rank has had a recent change in fortune.
How We Calculate It
Data
NSE's official end-of-day index file for every session since January 2023, covering 16 sector indices and 11 theme indices.
Sectors and themes
Sector indices hold companies of one industry (Bank, IT, Pharma...). Theme indices cut across industries (PSE, MNC, Defence, Consumption...). Use the buttons above the heatmap to see one group.
What Our Backtest Found
Short-term leadership
Over 41 monthly checks from April 2023 to October 2026, the three NSE sector or theme indices with the best previous month beat NIFTY 50 over the next month 66% of the time, by 1.6% on average. The three weakest sectors did as well as the market, not worse.
Longer windows
Ranking on 3-month returns gave a smaller lead (+0.8%, 54% of months). Sector indices overlap (Bank, Private Bank and Financial Services share many stocks), so the effective sample is smaller than 21 sectors suggest.
How to use it
Rotation charts show which parts of the market have led. 41 months is a short history and costs are ignored; for education only, not a buy or sell call.
