What Bulk, Block and Short-Selling Deals Show

Bulk deals

A bulk deal is a trade in which one client buys or sells more than 0.5% of a listed company's shares in a single session, through the normal trading window. Brokers must report it the same day, and NSE publishes the client name, side, quantity and average price.

Block deals

A block deal is a single large trade of at least Rs 10 crore executed in a special block-deal window, usually between two institutions that agreed the trade in advance. Promoter stake sales and fund rebalancing often go through this window.

Short selling

Selling shares one does not own, to buy them back later. Brokers report short sales to NSE, which publishes the quantity per stock. In India, institutions cannot short sell in the cash market and close out the same day without delivery, so most short positions are in the F&O market instead.

Reading a deal

A deal shows who traded and how much, not why. Many bulk deals are by high-frequency trading firms that buy and sell the same stock in the same session; check whether the same client appears on both sides before reading anything into it.

How We Calculate It

Search

The search box filters the session's deals by stock or client. "Search history" looks through every stored deal for the symbol or any client name containing your text.

Most active clients

Bulk and block deals of the last 20 sessions added up by client name: value bought, value sold, number of deals and number of different stocks.

What Our Backtest Found

Net bulk buying

Across 1,950 stock-days with at least Rs 1 crore of net bulk buying (round-trip trades left out), the stock beat the market over the next 20 sessions only 42% of the time, with a median of -2.2%. Big buyers in the deal list did not, on average, pick stocks that went on to outperform.

Net bulk selling

Stocks with net bulk selling (3,125 stock-days) did no worse than those with net buying. A big seller is often a fund exiting or a promoter raising money, which says little about the next weeks.

How to use it

Use deals to see who is trading a stock and in what size. On our data they are not a buy or sell signal. For education only.

Large Deals: Frequently Asked Questions

What are today's bulk deals on NSE?

The table above lists every bulk deal NSE reported for the latest session: stock, client, buy or sell, quantity, price and value. Switch to block deals or short selling with the buttons.

What is the difference between a bulk deal and a block deal?

A bulk deal is any trade above 0.5% of a company's shares by one client in a day, in the normal market. A block deal is a single trade of at least Rs 10 crore in a separate block window.

Can I see all deals by one investor?

Yes. Type part of the client name and press Search history to see every stored bulk, block and short-selling entry with that name.

Does a big bulk buy mean the stock will rise?

No. On our NSE data, stocks with net bulk buying did not reliably beat the market afterwards. Deals tell you who traded, not what happens next.
