What our backtest found NSE bhavcopy, 2 Jan 2023 - 9 Oct 2026; returns against the average liquid NSE stock

All NSE stocks in series EQ with at least Rs 1 crore traded that day, 2 Jan 2023 to 9 Oct 2026. What Volume Gainers Shows

Volume gainers (volume shockers)

Stocks of F&O stocks whose traded volume today was many times their normal volume. The ratio is today's volume divided by the average daily volume of the previous 20 sessions, so 5x means five times a normal day.

Why volume matters

Volume tells you how many shares changed hands. A sudden surge usually comes with news: results, an order win, a block of shares changing hands, an index inclusion or a rumour. The price change tells you which side was more urgent.

Price up or down

Filter the list by direction. A surge with a big price rise means buyers were chasing the stock; a surge with a fall means sellers were. Delivery % shows how much of the volume was taken for delivery rather than traded intraday.

Turnover filter

A tiny stock can show a 20x ratio on a few lakh rupees of trading. The default filter shows stocks with at least Rs 1 crore traded; switch to 10 crore for large, liquid names.

How We Calculate It

Data

NSE's official capital-market bhavcopy for every session and the delivery file. The 20-day average leaves out the current session, and volumes are rescaled after splits and bonuses so that a 1:5 split is not read as a 5x surge.

Surge count

The chart counts stocks at 3x their 20-day volume or more with at least Rs 1 crore of turnover, each session, against the NIFTY 50 candles.

What Our Backtest Found

Surge with a rise

In 26,023 cases where a liquid stock traded 5 times its normal volume and rose 3% or more, it beat the market over the next 20 sessions only 38% of the time; the median case lagged by 3.3%. The average was less bad (-1.0%) because a few stocks kept rising strongly.

Surge with a fall

Surges with a fall of 3% or more (4,183 cases) were followed by further underperformance on average: -1.1% over 5 sessions and -1.4% over 20.

How to use it

A volume surge marks a day when something changed for the stock. On our data it was not a reliable signal in either direction. For education only.

Volume Gainers: Frequently Asked Questions

Which stocks have the highest volume today?

The table above ranks F&O stocks by volume against their own 20-day average for the latest session. For the most traded stocks by value, see the Market Turnover page.

What is a volume shocker?

A stock trading several times its normal volume. On this page "normal" is the average of the previous 20 sessions.

Is a volume surge a buy signal?

No. On our NSE data, stocks with a volume surge and a price jump did not go on to beat the market reliably over the next days. The list shows unusual activity; it is not a recommendation.

Why is a stock missing from the list?

It needs 20 sessions of trading history and at least Rs 0.1 crore of turnover in the session. Newly listed stocks appear after 20 sessions.
